Comparaison de méthodes d'évaluation de la production secondaire d'une population de l'annélide polychète Ditrupa arietina (O.F. Muller) ArchiMer
Medernach, L; Gremare, A.
We compared the ability of three direct methods (increment summation, loss summation and instantaneous growth rate coefficient), the size-frequency method, and eight indirect methods (Banse and Mosher, Benke, Brey, Edgar, Morin and Bourassa, Plante and Downing, Robertson and Schwinghamer et al.) to measure or to predict the secondary production of a Mediterranean population of the polychaete Ditrupa arietina. This comparison was carried out both on the 1994 cohort during its two-year lifespan and on the entire population during the two years of the study (1994-1996). Our results showed that all three direct methods are more or less equivalent. Results referring to the year 1994-1995 showed a strong overestimation of the actual production by the size...

Experimental study of filtration activity in Ditrupa arietina (Annelida Polychaeta) using an automated image analysis system ArchiMer
Duchene, Jean Claude; Jordana, Esther; Charles, François; Gremare, Antoine; Amouroux, Jean Michel.
An automated image analysis system designed to assess the activity of benthic organisms is described. This system is used to study filtration in the serpulid polychaete Ditrupa arietina. The video sensor of the system is composed of a black and white charged coupled device, a microprocessor, a memory and an interface board. It is driven by real-time routines, which are downloaded in permanent memory prior to each experiment. These routines control picture acquisition frequency and compute the differences in grey levels between the image recorded at a given time and a reference image (corresponding to no filtration in the case of D. arietina). These differences are used to detect numerical objects, which are stored in the memory board. At the end of each...

Infestation des coquilles d'huîtres Crassostrea gigas par les polydores en Basse-Normandie: recommandations et mise au point d'un traitement pour réduire cette nuisance. ArchiMer
Ruellet, Thierry.
Polydorid species form a complex of 157 Spionidae. Among them, Boccardia polybranchia, Boccardia semibranchita, Polydora ciliata and Polydora hoplura regularly colonize oysters cultivated in Normandy. Only one tenth of the populations survives more than one year. Recruits observed on the East coast of Cotentin come from the rocky calcareous flatness of Calvados. Their reproduction is spread out over all the year but winter recruitment is more prejudicial for oysters. Deepest area are more infested. Polydorids create mudblisters which cause a bad marketing of the oyster production. In order to reduce this harmful effect, it is possible to shift the setting of the oyster towards the end of March, to transfer oysters towards other areas during the peak of...

Life cycles in brackish habitats: adaptive strategies of some polychaetes from the Venice lagoon ArchiMer
Prevedelli, D; Simonini, R.
The life cycle of five species of polychaetes living in the Venice lagoon is analysed with the aim of finding out if some traits can be interpreted as an adaptation to brackish environments. The studied species are characterized by different sizes and reproductive strategies. Marphysa sanguinea is a large-sized, annual iteroparous species belonging to the Eunicidae family that reproduces without epitokal modification. Perinereis cultrifera and P. rullieri are large-sized semelparous species belonging to the Nereididae family: the first reproduce with epitokal metamorphosis, the second do not. Ophryotrocha labronica and Dinophilus gyrociliatus are small iteroparous species with semi-continuous reproduction belonging to the Dorvilleidae and Dinophilidae...

Structure and functions of Polychaetofauna living in Mytilus galloprovincialis assemblages in Thermaikos Gulf (north Aegean Sea) ArchiMer
Damianidis, P; Chintiroglou, Cc.
The purpose of this study is to examine the Polychaetes populations of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck 1819 assemblage in Thessaloniki Bay (Perea, Neoi Epivates, Agia Triada) in space and time. Forty-eight Polychaetes species, which belong to 16 families, were identified among 10 593 individuals. The different distribution in space and time can be attributed to the life cycles of the Polychaetes, and also to the various biotic interactions. In general, the abundance follows the succession of the seasons, with some deviations though. Thus, the samples can be divided into two major groups, the winter and summer samples. The structure of the feeding guilds of the Polycheates population was also investigated and 9 different feeding guilds were...

Structure et importance des peuplements zooplanctoniques dans la baie d'Arcachon : milieux ouverts et lagunes aménagées de Certes ArchiMer
Castel, J.; Courties, C..
Specific composition and distribution of the zooplankton in Arcachon Bay varie along a salinity gradient from oceanic to neritic and lagoonal conditions. A peak of density and biomass is recorded in spring due to an increase of holoplanktonic species as well as larvae of benthic Invertebrates. A second maximum of abundance is observed in autumn. The community structure of copepods and polychaets larvae is considered in detail. The diversity (Shannon index, Sanders's rarefaction) decreases from the mouth of the Bay to the inner neritic water mass. Demographic parameters indicate that the populations structure is affected by the salinity gradient. Biomass increases significantly from the oceanic water to the inner neritic water mass while the species...

Structure of the artificial hard substrate assemblages in ports in Thermaikos Gulf (North Aegean Sea) ArchiMer
Karalis, P; Antoniadou, C; Chintiroglou, C.
The present study describes the hard substrate assemblages established on the concrete blocks of three ports placed in gradually longer distances from the main source of pollution in Thermaikos Gulf. The samplings were performed on a seasonal basis for a 2-year period. The data analysis indicates a clear separation of the assemblages from each port. Evenness and Shannon-Weaver diversity indices were calculated and their values were found to be quite high. This fact, combined with the seasonal pattern that these assemblages hold, reveals stability and a good adaptation of their faunistic components to local environmental conditions. A change due to the construction of a new block functioning as a surge barrier was detectable at the station of N. Michaniona....
